Allison was enjoying her summer in her Malibu home. The weather was a little hot lately so she had been running her Air Conditioner most of the time for the past couple of weeks. Today she was presented with some bad news– her electric bill. It was at that point she thought “I have all this sophisticated equipment in my Home Theater in Los Angeles, isn’t there any way it can help save me some money?”
At Technospeak, we hear this question from many of our Home Automation customers. Once we have shown them the possibilities for control of their Audio/Video equipment, they imaginations run wild with other things they can control. Believe or not, we can control Air Conditioners as well.
Allison was luck to have floor to ceiling windows in her home, which was great for gazing at her ocean view. However, those same window allows a lot of direct sunlight to come in during the afternoon hours which heated up her home pretty significantly. To combat this, we tied in some window shading and her Thermostat into the Home Automation system we had already installed to control her Home Theater Equipment.
We then programmed the system so that when the house reached a temperature that Allison thought was uncomfortable, the blinds were closed automatically and the temperature in the house was monitored for the next 30 minutes to see if it cooled down. If the house temperature was still beyond the uncomfortable point, the AC unit would then turn on. However, if the temperature could be stabilized with just the blind closure, the AC unit would remain off.
This additional programming significantly cut down her electric bill, while still providing her with a comfortable living environment. And it was done automatically without any extra work on her part.
Sound like an episode of the Jetsons? It isn’t. It is possible today to build these type of smarts into your home that saves you money without sacrificing your lifestyle.
