If you don’t know already, St. Patrick’s Day is this Friday. Although the origin of St. Patrick’s Day comes from a cultural and religious celebration of the death of Saint Patrick (the foremost patron Saint of Ireland), it is currently a celebration of Irish culture that lends itself to lots of parties, eating and drinking. This is particularly true when it’s on a day of the week people generally go out anyway, aka Friday night. If you are planning on holding one of these St Patrick’s Day parties, you have a lot of stuff to keep track of to make your party is a success. As Home Automation contractors, we wanted to alleviate some of this pressure by sharing some of our ideas on how Home Automation equipment can make your St Patty’s day celebration great. Our top recommendations are as follows:
A traditional food that is often served as part of a St. Patty’s day celebration is Corn-beef and Cabbage. A common way to prepare this dish is slow-cooking it for 8-9 hours. Most of us have to work this Friday, meaning at some point we have leave the Corn-beef and cabbage to cook on it’s own. However, what if the power goes out after you leave? What happens if you added too much water in your recipe and it overflows into your counter, cabinets, floor and other areas? Don’t worry, we have some ideas to resolve. A Home Automation system powered by Alarm.com has the ability to notify you via text or email when the power goes out as its central brain is a security panel equipped with a battery backup built into the system. This system can even tell you if it’s just your home or several homes in the area. Then you can run home, grab your dish and take it to a neighbor or party attendee nearby to keep the dish cooking. To keep on top of any overflow issues, a flood sensor temporarily setup next to your slow cooker and tied to your Alarm.com Home Automation system could instantly tell you via text or email when fluid is detected. With a Lutron controlled AC outlet connected to the same Home Automation system, you could then turn off the slow cooker via that same phone and stop the liquid from overflowing.
The most common compliment to that great Corn-beef and cabbage dish is of course ice-cold Irish Beer. Most of the popular Irish beers out there are either Stouts or ales, which should ideally be served at 45-55 degrees and 38-45 degrees respectively. Our personal favorites are Guinness Stout and Harp Lager and we make sure to serve them at these temperatures. Therein lies the problem as the ideal refrigerator temperature to keep your food fresh is between 35-39 degrees. So how do we resolve? Well, unless you have a dedicated refrigerator handy, you are looking at coolers to keep your beer cool– a couple in fact if you are serving more than one type of beer. But how to maintain the right serving temperature? Don’t worry, that’s where Home Automation electronics can again save the day. If you have a Home Automation system by Control4 installed, it can talk to a series of wireless relays that have built in temperature sensors in them. We can mount one to the side of each cooler to monitor the temperature inside. When the temperature gets out of range, you can be notified via email or text of the issue and remedy as you best see fit.
And finally, with good food and drink comes great tunes in all the areas you think you might have party-goers. Our favorite is listening to St. Patty’s Day Radio on SiriusXM (channel 142). If there is more than one room your party-goes are likely to be in and you don’t have speakers in all these rooms, this could present a problem. Don’t worry– Home Automation electronics can solve this issue as well. For a quick and easy fix, we recommend installing a Sonos Play 5 in each location. With the help of an easy to use iPhone or Android app, you can easily stream St. Patty’s day radio (or any number of other streaming services) in all these locations. For something more permanent, you can install in-ceiling speakers in all these locations and use a Control4 based Home Automation system to power them while listening to any number of streaming equipment devices. The Control4 system would give you the added bonus of also setting the right party mood by simultaneously dimming all the lights in these party locations.
